gelli printed portraits, comment je les ai fait - how I did it.

Comment je les ai fait? Je vous montre:

How did I do it? I'll show you:

J'aime bien utiliser les peinture acrylique transparentes (marque Amsterdam) en couleur foncé ou rouge pour commencer. J'étale de la peinture si fin que je vois un peu à travers le gelli plate. Ensuite je place une page d'un magazine dessus et je suis précis à ne pas laisser des bulles d'air. Les magazine que j'utilise sont les 'glossy' magazines: les pages sont un peu épais et les photos sont un peu brillant. Les magazines bas gammes ne marchent pas. Vogue, Harper's bazar, L'officiel (pas les pages mattes) mais il y a beaucoup plus de magazines qu'on peut utiliser... il faut essayer...

I like to use transparent acrylic paints ( of the brand Amsterdam) and I start with a dark colour or bright red. I brayer the paint over the plate in such a thin layer that I can see through a little. Then I place a magazine picture on top and make sure there are no airbubbles. The magazines I used are the glossy pages of magazines like Vogue, Harper's bazar, She, l'Officiel etc. The cheaper ones don't work so well, but for the rest it is really trial and error.

Déjà en soulevant un peu la page je sais que l'empreinte sera bon. L'encre noir de la page à résisté la peinture.

The moment I lift a corner of the page I can tell that the print will be a good one. The black ink of the page has resisted the paint.

Je la tire entièrement. Vous voyez pourquoi ça a marché: la page du magazine que j'ai choisi avait beaucoup de contrastes; c'est ça le secret!

I pull the page completely now and you can see that it will work: the magazine page that I had chosen had strong contrasts in the features of the face: that is the secret!

Mais, malheur, j'ai commit une gaffe inconsciemment. Un moment j'ai voulu nettoyer le gelli plate par tirer les restes de la peinture avec un papier usé. Je ne savait pas que le dessin à crayon d'un enfant collait au gelli plate et je ne sait pas comment l'enlever. Heureusement cela n'a pas d'effet sur mes empreintes.

Une leçon à prendre: le crayon et le gelli plate ne sont pas amis.

But oh dear, somewhere along the printing sessions I made a mistake, that I had never thought it would happen. At one point I cleaned the plate by pulling the rest of the paint with a used paper. There was a children's pencil drawing on it. The pencil marks got stuck to the plate and I don't know how to get it off. It doesn't affect the prints though.

A lesson learned: pencil an gelli plate are not compatible.

Regardez ce qu'il reste sur la page. Puisque j'ai utilisé de la peinture transparente le visage est bien visible. J'aurai pu utiliser cette phot comme ça dans un collage, mais j'ai décidé de le nettoyer avec un lingette bébé. Entre temps l'image sur le gelli plate m'attend et est sèche, mais ça n'est pas grave.

Look at all the purple transparent paint over the photo. I could use the picture that way but I decided to wipe it clean with a babywipe. Meanwhile the picture on the plate is waiting for the next step and has dried, but that doesn't matter.

Ensuite j'étale de la peinture bleu clair par dessus. C'est une couche si fin que je vois l'image en dessous: c'est justement très important. La nouvelle couche de la peinture prendra de la peinture séchée au même temps dans la nouvelle empreinte.

Then I brayer a very thin layer of light blue paint on top. I need to see the picture through it in order to get a good print. The new layer of paint will reactivate the layer underneath and pull it all up in the next print.
