The online course of "sketchbook skool" is so versatile. One week we learned how to draw rather realistic portraits and then this week we enter a complete different world, the world of illustrations and whimsical figures. The teacher, Nelleke Verhoeff, takes us by the hand to lead us to new ways and methods how to create original characters. It was such a discovery that I can only invite you to go and listen to what Danny Gregory has to say about this course and then you surely want to join too.
So then I set off drawing faces.... at least one a day; they're quick drawings, fun drawings. No precision is needed to find a character that has to tell you his story. You can make a face by starting from a simple circle....go on and try to capture emotions....there's no end to experimenting here.
You can't tell from the drawings but these were drawn after a collage with magazine pictures. I created different characters with various elements.

So amusing to draw with your non dominant hand. They look even more whimsical. The head on the right reminds me of a project I did for the "Jardin du mixed media" a blog that calls for challenges. Just follow the links to see what I mean.
It's fascinating that it also works when you draw on teabags. These bags were on my table a long time, waiting to be used in one of my textile projects. Now they end up here.....actually it's not the end, I can take another step with these faces..... like print them (see further down for an example).
Even scraps of torn teabags find their way in my art: I saw heads in the small tea stains and I created small characters. One of them climbed onto Danny's shoulder... eh... on the shoulder of the sketch I made of him while he presented one of the 'skool's' teachers on video. The little character is one-eyed but has a face nevertheless.

On the other scrap of teabag I drew a bear's head with neocolor II crayons. When printed I had two of the same pictures: you would say it's mummy bear urging her little one to go ahead and try all this fun.
And fun it is to be able to draw and make prints. Lynn Hoppe shows a tutorial on her blog how to do this, so hop over and see how she did it. I tried the technique on both paper and fabric and it worked fine!
Drawing on a teabag, on a medicine box, a printed image......
on paper, in my sketchbook, collage (with the same piece of collage I created twin sisters), a piece of text - click on the photo to see it larger so you'll be able to read the appropriate text. You understand: I'm up to my nose into drawing faces.
